GLOBAL SOURCING- Colour Palettes, Brand Name, Exsisting brand- (WEEK 6)

EXISTING BRAND RESEARCH

We started off this week by researching an 'Existing Brand' in lots of different aspects; competitors, their advertising, their packaging, their reputation, their customer etc. and then presenting this to the rest of the class later on.

We chose to research the brand 'Coca Cola' because it was one that everyone would know and we thought that it would be interesting to look into why the renowned brand is so successful.

We all split the research into sections and split the sections between us. We looked into the history of the Coca Cola bottle, where the name came from and when they started up, their sustainability, advertising,  competitors and general/ fun facts about Coca Cola.

Presenting in front of the class was really scary for me and I shook like a leaf! But I'm glad that I did it because every step I take is a step in the right direction.

COLOUR PALETTES

We met up as a group after the presentation to share our colour palette ideas- we agreed to make at least one colour palette each so that everyone had an involvement and decided to take a vote on which were our favourites. We ended up cutting and sticking individual colours to create two completely new colour palettes that we were all happy with- One for Autumn/ Winter and one for Spring/ Summer.

After we had decided on our final palettes, I worked on making mood boards for each palette. I edited photos by changing the hue to match our palettes and adjusted exposure to make the photos look softer.

During our group meeting, we threw some more brand name ideas around as we desperately needed to pick one! We looked back over our mind map and the word 'Oomph' was written down. We warmed to it but then soon found that it already existed so we really dug deep and investigated further. We ended up with the name 'Whimsical' which means playful, mischievous and curious - how wonderful!? We really liked this name but shortened it to 'Whimsic' as 'Whimsical' sounded too girly and femenine which is not what we wanted for a unisex, genderless clothing brand.

MISSION STATEMENT

We are an individual children's wear brand with a modest approach to unisex and genderless clothing. Our main focus is to use our clothing to bring back the fun of being young with our stimulating and exciting textures and colours and by creating an experience within our store that engages and electrifies young minds.

I wrote this mission statement for our brand which is basically a very brief and to-the-point statement about who we are as a brand.

TEXTURE TREND RESEARCH

One of our USP (Unique Selling Points) is the fun textures and prints used so I thought it was necessary to look into textile and print trends. This ensures that our brand stays current and is also inspired by new and innovative textiles that are trending at the time. This week I have made two mood boards on Spring/Summer 17 and one on Autumn/ Winter 17/18. I used WGSN to create these boards and they contain pictures of the textiles that are predicted for that season, the name of the textile trend and a bit of writing about it. They also include a general overview of the trends for that particular category and season.

SHAPE TREND RESEARCH

I also thought that it would be useful to include shape research as this is yet another way that we can keep our brand current. This will give us an idea of the sort of shapes that will be popular in 17/18. Me and Jasmin decided to look at shape trends for both boys and girls but to independently research for the particular season that we are designing for. ( Jasmin designing for Spring/ Summer and myself designing for Autumn/ Winter )

ZINE LAYOUT IDEAS

IDEA NO.1
IDEA NO.2

As a group, we have made many decisions by making several options by whoever is willing within the group and then taking a vote. We figured that this is the most fair way to do things- everyone that's willing to put in the effort gets an input and taking a vote means that everyone has considered our choices carefully, choosing what's most appropriate to our brand.

I really like to be involved with a lot of aspects to building a brand so I put together two very simple templates for our 'Meet The Team' page- baring in mind the theme would be constant throughout the zine.

The circle shapes are where we would put pictures of ourselves and the second picture that features two large circles demonstrates the 'Meet The Team' going into more depth. We would split the team into their job titles with a brief description of their role and a 'fun fact' about themselves underneath.

In reflection, I think these templates are a little too mature and I let my own personal style affect my vision. But I like them none-the-less!

I am very happy with our progress as a group, especially within the last week! Stay tuned to see what we get up to next.
