LIVE PROJECT - Week 6 - Design Development

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

As a group, we decided to use out easter break to further develop our existing designs. This really helps to both ensure that the collection is more coherent, using design development as valuable time to add in features that other team members have successfully used and helps to consider every aspect of the garment is considered.

I developed two of my designs that were picked for the selection and started off with six new adaptations of the pleated crop top I designed. I played around with changing the tie around the neck to a mandarin collar and a pleated neck stand, inspiration taken from other designs in the collection. I experimented with the way that the two overlapping layers cross and also the length and shape of them too.

For my dress development, I started by changing the amount of layers in the skirt and where the layers finished. I changed the button stand slightly to feature a ribbon that loops around the button with two layers of folded pleats either side. I used this because I designed a similar feature on another dress and Iain really liked it and suggested that it would be nice to use it as a theme throughout.

I changed the sleeve as I thought that the original sleeve wasn't quite working- the dress looked like a victorian night gown to me! I think that this new sleeve helps to modernise the design more. I played around with proportion of the ratio of bodice to skirt as well which I think created some interesting new additions.

I wanted to really focus of the sleeve detailing as we discussed and agreed that this would be a running theme throughout our collection and so I designed some short sleeves and long sleeves with both a short cuff and a long cuff, using a variety of techniques and features that we all liked.
